Clarenville and the surrounding areas offer great opportunities for users of ATV’s and Snowmobiles to explore and have fun. We are encouraging people to enjoy the sport safely while following the rules and respecting the rights of others.
ATV/snowmobile SAFETY TIPS
- ALWAYS WEAR A HELMET. EFFECTIVE MAY 19, 2022, THE USE OF HELMETS AND SEATBELTS (WHERE INSTALLED BY MANUFACTURERS) WILL BE MANDATORY FOR THE OPERATION OF ALL OFF-ROAD VEHICLES IN NEWFOUNDLAND AND LABRADOR.
- IF YOU OPERATE ACROSS TOWN OR PROVINCIAL ROADS YOU MUST DO IT SAFELY AND YOU ARE REQUIRED TO HAVE A VALID DRIVERS LICENCE AND CARRY INSURANCE ON YOUR ATV.
- YOU ARE NOT PERMITTED TO CARRY MORE PASSENGERS THAN THE NUMBER FOR WHICH THE VEHICLE WAS DESIGNED TO CARRY.
- YOU NEED TO BE AT LEAST 16 YEARS OF AGE TO OPERATE AN ADULT-SIZED ATV. (PARENTS ARE LEGALLY LIABLE FOR OPERATORS UNDER 18).
- OPERATE YOUR ATV WITH DUE CARE AND ATTENTION, ENSURING THE MACHINE IS IN PROPER WORKING ORDER, OPERATED AT A SAFE SPEED, WITH REASON ABLE CONSIDERATION FOR OTHER PERSONS AND PROPERTY.
- YOU ARE REQUIRED TO OBEY ALL TRAIL SIGNAGE.
- NEVER OPERATE AN ATV UNDER THE INFLUENCE OF ALCOHOL OR DRUGS.
- REGISTER YOUR ATV WITH THE MOTOR REGISTRATION DIVISION OF SERVICE NL AND HAVE PLATES AFFIXED TO THE VEHICLE WHICH ARE CLEARLY VISIBLE.
ATV/UTV safety tips for off-roading
- RIDE ONLY ON DESIGNATED TRAILS AND AT A SAFE SPEED (WATCH YOUR SPEED AROUND CORNERS!)
- ALWAYS WEAR A DOT-COMPLIANT HELMET. WE ALSO RECOMMEND WEARING GOGGLES, LONG SLEEVES, LONG PANTS, OVER-THE-ANKLE BOOTS, AND GLOVES FOR ULTIMATE PROTECTION
- FOLLOW THE RULES AND REGULATIONS OF THE AREA WHERE YOU’RE RIDING
- ESTABLISH GROUND RULES IF YOU ARE IN A GROUP
- CHOOSE THE RIGHT ATV/UTV FOR YOUR AGE/SKILL LEVEL
- NO PASSENGERS ON SINGLE-RIDER ATVS
- NEVER RIDE UNDER THE INFLUENCE
- KIDS UNDER 16 SHOULD BE SUPERVISED
Partnerships
The Town of Clarenville in partnership with the Discovery Trail Snowmobile Association, The RCMP, Department of Fisheries, Forestry and Agriculture and you, all need to work together to make ATV use in Clarenville safer. Before you ride please take the time to become familiar with and obey the Highway Traffic Act, as well as the Motorized Snow Vehicle and All-Terrain Vehicles Act.
